Skills camp 2016

Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby wants YOU to join our family! Become a skater, referee, or volunteer.

Come see what it’s all about at our Skills Camp on Monday, September 12, at Western Skateland (930 W. 17th St)! It starts at 7 p.m. and will last for about an hour and a half. For a mere $5, plus $1 skate rental if you don’t have your own, we’ll go over the basics of the game and let you try out your skills. We’ll supply the gear, instruction, and encouragement for your first roller derby lesson.

BHRD is also really keen to add to our amazing referee crew. We welcome all genders who are interested in becoming refs attend the skills camp to try out their skills AND learn what reffing in roller derby is all about.

If you’re not interested in skating, but would love to learn about becoming one of our essential and awesome non-skating officials or volunteers, stop by and talk to us. We’ll get you signed up! No charge for stopping by just to talk!

A big thank you everyone who attended our annual fall skills camp on Sept. 14 at Western Skateland! It was great to see such a large turn-out.

Now that you’ve gotten a taste, are you interested in joining up? If so, don’t forget about our  Fall Boot Camp.

Not sure if you want to join? Don’t forget about our information session on Sept. 21—at this event, you can sign up for our fall boot camp or just learn more about our league and watch a practice.

Informational Session on Monday, Sept. 21: This session is for people who want to sign up for our boot camp. We’ll educate you about the necessary derby gear, have you fill out paperwork, and observe the league practicing. If you can’t make the boot camp commitment, we have a new skater program that meets every Thursday throughout the year! FALL 2014 BOOT CAMP

LACE UP YOUR SKATES.
IT’S DERBY TIME.

We’re looking for skaters and refs—no experience required! We’ll teach you what you need to know at our six-week training boot camp from September 22nd to October 30th. Whether you come in fresh or had  a taste for derby at our skills camp, this is a great opportunity to get in on the action!

What: A six-week boot camp to get YOU ready for team placements!
Who: This boot camp is for all new skaters, including those already in our Disorderlies program!
Where: Our badass warehouse, the Cardiac Arena! (known to most as 1801 N. Curry Pike, at the corner of Curry Pike and Vernal Pike)
When: Mondays and Thursdays from 7-9pm, and Saturdays from 10-12 (Begins Monday, Sept. 22nd, with an informational/sign-up day the Thursday before.)
How much: $60 for the boot camp + $35 for WFTDA insurance = $95
Why: Because BHRD wants YOU!

The cost for the boot camp is $95, which is $60 for the boot camp itself and $35 for insurance through WFTDA, which will need to be paid before you can skate at the Cardiac Arena. You will also need your own skates and gear, but we do have some gear available to rent if you need to. Figuring out what gear you need can be overwhelming, but not to worry — following our Skills Camp on Sept. 14th, we’ll have an off-skates day on Thursday, Sept. 18 to kick-off the boot camp, during which we’ll give you the lowdown on all things gear-related. Once you’re armed with knowledge, you can order gear online or go to Vital Skates in Indy. We’ll be happy to help you figure out what you need.

Also, the Division I Playoffs tournament in Evansville, IN, is from September 19 -21, right before our boot camp begins – there will be plenty of vendors there, so this is a great chance to try on gear before you buy. It’s also an opportunity to see some of the top teams in the world go head-to-head, including London, Texas, and many more.

If you can’t get your skates or your insurance by Sept. 22, don’t worry – we encourage you to still go to the practices that week for off-skates training and to watch. People will be there to answer questions, and there is quite a bit you can learn by watching!

IMPORTANT DATES:

Informational Session on Thursday, Sept. 18th: This session is for people who want to sign-up for our boot camp. We’ll talk about our league structure, educate you about the necessary derby gear, and have you fill out paperwork.

Monday, Sept. 22nd: First day of our boot camp.

Thursday, Oct. 30th: Last day of our boot camp.

Saturday, November 8th: After our boot camp ends, participants who have passed their WFTDA minimum skills test will have the chance to skate in their first scrimmage, which will also be used to determine league placement. This scrimmage will be open to the public, so your friends and family can come and cheer you on!

SCHEDULE RUNDOWN:

Mondays, 7-9pm From 7-8pm, you’ll skate with our league members, and from 8-9pm, we’ll have off-skates training planned for you.

Thursdays, 7-9pm. Thursdays are Disorderlies practices – you’ll do technical skills/footwork drills with the league, learn about derby gameplay and rules, and do some off-skates workouts.

Saturdays, 10-12am. Open laps (to practice skills learned during the week) and off-skates training.

Any questions / need more info? Just email recruitment.bhrd@gmail.com!

Check out our Become a Skater page, too. We also have more information for those interested in reffing.
