September 12 Skills Camp

Skills camp 2016

Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby wants YOU to join our family! Become a skater, referee, or volunteer.

Come see what it’s all about at our Skills Camp on Monday, September 12, at Western Skateland (930 W. 17th St)! It starts at 7 p.m. and will last for about an hour and a half. For a mere $5, plus $1 skate rental if you don’t have your own, we’ll go over the basics of the game and let you try out your skills. We’ll supply the gear, instruction, and encouragement for your first roller derby lesson.

BHRD is also really keen to add to our amazing referee crew. We welcome all genders who are interested in becoming refs attend the skills camp to try out their skills AND learn what reffing in roller derby is all about.

If you’re not interested in skating, but would love to learn about becoming one of our essential and awesome non-skating officials or volunteers, stop by and talk to us. We’ll get you signed up! No charge for stopping by just to talk!

Any questions for us? Email recruitment.bhrd@gmail.com, and be sure to check out our “Become a Skater” page for more details on joining BHRD. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for more fun and announcements!

Note: After the skills camp, we will invite you to attend our six-week intensive boot camp and get your roller derby career rolling (yay derby puns!)

Cornfed Bout Recap

Bout Recap: BHRD vs. Cornfed Derby Dames

Cornfed Bout Recap

Bloomington, Ind. — On March 6, your very own Flatliners and Code Blue Assassins took on Cornfed Derby Dames in two exciting regulation scrimmages, eventually walking away with two wins under their belts! The Flatliners started off strong with Teeth racking up points on a power jam. Throughout the game they kept a strong defense with exciting additions added to the roster; Special Sass, recently back from an injury, and Squirrely Shirley, back from retirement. The last jam before halftime may have left fans biting their nails, a score of Flatliners 79 Cornfed 71 and a power jam in Cornfed’s favor, but the Flatliners came back strong and ready to fight for every point! Through a strong till the end defense and a variety of jammers, the Flatliners ended the game with an amazing victory, 211-120!

The Code Blue Assassins took the track next with new additions of Buttercup, a junior transfer from Fort Wayne and Geminihilist, recently moved up from the DO program. Many on the CBA line up are new to derby but don’t let that fool you. Notable jammers for the CBAs were Buffy Smothers, Eternal Glamnation, and Miso. Early in the first half Carl Slaygan provided her team with a much needed power jam when she hit Cornfed’s jammer for a track cut. With a strong defense, the CBAs brought a second victory, 202-154, for your very own Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby!
