Wanna play roller derby?
Yes. Yes you do.
Join Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby!
Where to start: Contact Knock’r Down (firstname.lastname@example.org) to find out about opportunities to join our striver contingent, the Disorderlies. We recommend skating at Western Skateland a few times and talking with a couple skaters before you decide to commit to buying gear. See the new skater information packet below. Also keep an eye out for one of our Skills Camps, which are held throughout the year. Skates and gear are provided ($1 for skate rental), and you can try out some derby skills. It’s the perfect opportunity to get a taste of derby!
The next step: BHRD created a program in 2010 called the “Disorderlies” to introduce new skaters to the world of derby and create a space for people who want to play but can’t make the full league commitment. Disorderlies meet once a week on Thursday nights to learn the basics of skating and derby (no previous skating experience required). There are additional practices and open skating session which are open to those Disorderlies that want more practice. To participate in this program you will need WFTDA insurance and full gear (helmet, mouth guard, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and skates).
All in: Once you’ve “graduated” from the Disorderlies, you’re eligible to join the league and may be placed on one of the travel teams, the Flatliners (charter team) or the Code Blue Assassins (B team). Full league skaters practice 3 nights a week, bout 1-3 times per month during the season, participate in committee work, and do a fair amount of travel. You will be busy but you’ll be having a great time and meeting tons of new people.
