Thanks for coming to our 2015 Skills Camp!

skillscamp2015_small

A big thank you everyone who attended our annual fall skills camp on Sept. 14 at Western Skateland! It was great to see such a large turn-out.

Now that you’ve gotten a taste, are you interested in joining up? If so, don’t forget about our  Fall Boot Camp.

Not sure if you want to join? Don’t forget about our information session on Sept. 21—at this event, you can sign up for our fall boot camp or just learn more about our league and watch a practice.

Informational Session on Monday, Sept. 21: This session is for people who want to sign up for our boot camp. We’ll educate you about the necessary derby gear, have you fill out paperwork, and observe the league practicing. If you can’t make the boot camp commitment, we have a new skater program that meets every Thursday throughout the year! Visit our Disorderlies program page for more information.

Fall 2015 Boot Camp

2015seasonphoto

We’re looking for skaters and refs—no experience required! We’ll teach you what you need to know at our six-week training boot camp from September 24 to November 5. Whether you come in fresh or had  a taste for derby at our skills camp, this is a great opportunity to get in on the action!

What: A six-week boot camp to get YOU ready for team placements!

Who: This boot camp is for all new skaters, including those already in our Disorderlies program!

Where: Our badass warehouse, the Cardiac Arena (known to most as 1801 N. Curry Pike, at the corner of Curry Pike and Vernal Pike)

When: Mondays and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-Noon
(Begins Thursday, Sept. 24thwith an optional informational/paperwork day on Monday, Sept. 21)

How much: $60 for the boot camp + $35 for WFTDA insurance = $95

Why: Because BHRD wants YOU!

The cost for the boot camp is $95, which is $60 for the boot camp itself and $35 for insurance through WFTDA, which will need to be paid before you can skate at the Cardiac Arena. You will also need your own skates and gear, but we do have some gear available to rent if you need to. Figuring out what gear you need can be overwhelming, but not to worry — following our Skills Camp on Sept. 14, we’ll have an optional informational session on Monday, Sept. 21 to kick-off the boot camp, during which we’ll give you the lowdown on all things gear-related. Once you’re armed with knowledge, you can order gear online, go to Vital Skates in Indy, or look for used gear in good condition locally or online. We’ll be happy to help you figure out what you need.

September 14th Skills Camp!

skillscamp2015

Wonder what this crazy thing called roller derby is all about?

Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby wants YOU to join our family! Become a skater, referee, or volunteer.

Come see what it’s all about at our Skills Camp on Monday, September 14, at Western Skateland (930 W. 17th St). It starts at 6:30 pm and will last for about an hour. For a mere $5, plus $1 skate rental if you don’t have your own, we’ll go over the basics of the game and let you try out your skills. We’ll supply the gear, instruction, and encouragement for your first roller derby lesson.

BHRD is also really keen to add to our amazing referee crew. Men and women who are interested in becoming refs can attend the skills camp to try out their skills AND learn what reffing in roller derby is all about.

If you’re not interested in skating, but would love to learn about becoming one of our essential and awesome non-skating officials or volunteers, stop by and talk to us. We’ll get you signed up! No charge for stopping by just to talk!

Any questions for us? Email Knock’r Down at recruitment.bhrd@gmail.com, and be sure to visit our Join BHRD page for more information.

Note: After the skills camp, we will invite you to attend an optional session during our league practice on Monday, Sept. 21 to learn about the gear required for roller derby and answer any questions you may have. Then, if you’re still interested, you’ll have the opportunity to sign up for our six-week intensive boot camp and get your roller derby career rolling (yay derby puns!)—learn more details about this boot camp!

Hugs and hip checks,
BHRD

Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby Fundraiser: Screening of “8 Wheels of Death” and Dance Party with DJ Pixie

Friday, June 12, 8:30 p.m.
The Back Door, 207 S. College Ave., Bloomington, Ind.

Come party with Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby at The Back Door! We’ll kick off the night with a screening of “8 Wheels of Death” at 8:30 pm. A Chris “Sir Loin” Rall helmed production (released in 2009) with plenty of recognizable BHRD skaters, this movie is a “story of love, roller derby… and a relentless hunger for brains.” Whether you’ve seen it, were a part of it, or are a first-timer, don’t miss the “world’s first roller derby zombie romantic comedy,” shot right here in Bloomington!

The fun will continue after the screening (starting roughly 9:15 or so) with a dance party with DJ Pixie! There will also be a photo booth and all sorts of games and activities to win BHRD merch and tickets to our season closer on June 20.

AND! Do you love dressing up? Come prepared for a by-donation zombie costume contest right after the movie. The best zombie costume will receive free BHRD tickets!

We do ask for a $5-$10 donation at the door. It costs a lot of money to do what we love to do, and it takes people like you to keep us going. Thank you so much for your generous support!

Click here for the Facebook event. We hope to see you there!
